Creating for a Girl

I realized now that I am almost 36 weeks along I haven't posted anything about what I have for the little lady. Well I have been busy crafting and sewing. So here are some pictures of what I have been making.

These are all the flowers I have made (so far). I know I will make more, I already have the itch to make a crochet flower. Notice the beaver orange, she will be wearing that this season. :)

Usually for flower headbands each flower has its own band it is attached to. To me that seemed a waste and what if I wanted that particular flower on a different band. So I designed away to clip the flowers onto different bands. That also means the flowers can be used later when she has hair to clip back. It is hard to tell the colors in the picture but there is one black and the others are white and pink.

Of course you can't forget about the hats. Which I'm actually surprised I haven't made more. But I usually don't really get going on crocheting until the weather gets cooler. The really long hat is for newborn pictures.

This is one of the pieces of art for the room (it is watercolor) and I still need to get it framed. I also have plans to paint a Bible verse on some wood for another open space on the wall.

These are the colors I used for the little lady's blanket. My Mom was great and came up last week to help make the blanket and curtains for the room. We whipped out the blanket in about two days. I forgot to get a picture of it before I packed it in the hospital bag, but I am happy with how it turned out. A few days ago I finished up all the sewing I needed to get done before she comes.

Not too many more big projects to complete before this girl comes, still many things I want to get done or at least work on. But at four weeks away I am starting to feel more ready, though maybe not emotionally ready for a baby and a toddler. That is a whole different post.

The Craft Room: Rolled Flower Pillows

We have had these pillows since we got married. They are quite boring and I've wanted to replace them for awhile. But instead, I thought, why not just update them.

So I made a number of rolled flowers out of plain white muslin. They are pretty easy to make, plenty of tutorials on other people's blogs or youtube. After I made them it would have been easiest to hot glue them on to the pillows, but I wanted to have the freedom to take them off if I didn't like it, or if I wanted to change it. So I decided to sew them on instead. Now I like the look of the pillows much more.

The Craft Room: Finger Knitting Scraf

I learned how to finger knit from a friend, who learned from a friend, who learned from Anthropology.

This is what I made. Simple, just five chains of finger knitting tied together. If I was to do it again I would make it just a little shorter. But I'm still happy with how it turned out. Now I need to come up with something else to make with finger knitting, it is so quick and easy.

The Craft Room: What I've Been Doing

Awhile back I was thinking I should cut back on crafting. Thinking I don't really have the time, nor really the space or even that much money to work with. But then I realized I am a creative being, I like to make things or at least plan to make things. So even though money is tight, and my time is limited I still find ways to be crafty. It is part of me, I will always have at least two or three projects I'm working on with a few more waiting in the wings.

With that said what have I been working on you may wonder. I will always be working on scrapbooking, currently I am trying to get 2009 finished before the end of this year. I have also been working on a seemingly never ending super secret project that is about to end. I can share pictures later once it has been given to who it is for. All I have to say is if you ever feel the urge to paint your own subway art. DON'T DO IT! Run, run very far away from that desire. But if you must, please do it on the computer and then have it printed. Of course The Farmer said I should have done it in Photoshop and then sent it to Costso it print on a canvas after I was half way done. Dang it. But I am happy that I have done it and it should be a wonderful gift.

But that is not all I have done. I have been working on a few things for Micah. First is this fabric pull toy, I have no genius name for it other then that. I might be able to create things with fabric and paper but with words, I don't think so.

All this is is an old wipe container with stripes of fabric knotted together that Micah then pulls out of the top. Might sounds boring but it helps with fine motor development and he actually has enjoyed playing with it a few times. He is also fond of open and closing the lid.

The next thing I have made for him is a body book. It is just pictures of different body parts of his that I labeled in Photoshop, then printed and laminated the pages. Helps with fine motor skills as he turns the page and the other obvious thing it teaches him is his body parts. Hmmm imagine that.

Lastly I also made him a family book, it is similar to the body book. The book as picture of all of Micah's immediate family members. He has enjoyed looking through this book.

The Craft Room: Ruffle Flower T-shirt

Fun DIY project to spice up a plain T.

:: Start with a basic t-shirt, you will need two shirts. So it is best to get them on clearance or real cheap. I got these at H&M. I bought one my size and the other the biggest size they carried so I had plenty of extra fabric.

:: With the extra shirt cut up rough flowers with five petals (from now on I refer to these as the petals). This turned out to be the most time consuming part, I was hoping my cricut would be able to do it but sadly it didn't work.

:: Next pin on the petals where you want the flowers to be. (Lesson learned, make them closer together then I did here).

:: Each of the flowers used five petals. Take one petal, fold it in half and then fold it in half again. Next stitch it onto the shirt, repeat with three more so you have a total of four petals making the flower. Use the fifth one in the center (folding it the same way), I had to add a few extra stitches on this petal to make it open up how I wanted.

:: Final result....I am happy with how it turned out. As I said though I would have done the flowers tighter together, especially since after I washed it the shrunk a little. Now I am on the hunt for another sweet deal on two shirts.
